Things to do in San Diego during your first week

July 21, 20266 min read

The first week of a mid-term stay is the fun part: nothing is routine yet, and everything is new. San Diego rewards a slow start, so pick one anchor activity a day and leave the rest of the hours open.

Day one: stay close to home

Unpack, then walk your immediate neighborhood. From Clairemont you are minutes from Clairemont Village shops and Tecolote Canyon trails. From El Cajon you have Main Street, Parkway Plaza, and quick access to the 8 and 67 freeways for weekend trips.

Balboa Park deserves a full morning

Balboa Park packs museums, gardens, the Botanical Building, and the San Diego Zoo into 1,200 acres. Arrive early, park on the Sixth Avenue side, and plan on two museums maximum so it stays enjoyable.

Pick your beach

  • Pacific Beach: boardwalk energy, easy parking on weekdays, good for a sunset walk.
  • La Jolla Cove: sea lions, snorkeling, and the best cliff-top views in the city.
  • Mission Bay: calm water, grass, and BBQ spots — the most family-friendly option.
  • Coronado: wide sand and the Hotel del Coronado, worth the bridge drive once.

Eat like a local

San Diego's food identity is Baja-influenced: fish tacos, carne asada burritos, and birria. Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa is the go-to for Asian food and is a short drive from Clairemont, while El Cajon's Main Street corridor has excellent Middle Eastern bakeries and grills.

Weekend day trips within an hour

  • Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve for coastal hiking.
  • Mount Helix and Cowles Mountain for sunrise views over East County.
  • Julian for pie and pines, about an hour from El Cajon.
  • Coronado Ferry from downtown for a car-free afternoon.
