Things to do
El Cajon and East County: hikes, lakes, and mountain escapes
If you are staying in El Cajon, your weekends look different from a beach-side stay. Trailheads, lakes, and the Laguna Mountains are all within an hour, and the coast is still a 25-minute drive when you want it.
Hikes to start with
- Cowles Mountain: the classic San Diego summit, about 3 miles round trip.
- Mount Helix: short walk to a panoramic amphitheater view over La Mesa.
- Mission Trails Regional Park: 60+ miles of trail and the Old Mission Dam.
- Iron Mountain in Poway: exposed but rewarding, best in the morning.
Water without the ocean
Lake Jennings and Lake Murray are both close by for fishing, walking loops, and picnics. Santee Lakes adds playgrounds and a paved path that is easy with kids or a stroller.
Mountain day trips
Head up the 8 to Alpine and Descanso, then continue to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park or Julian for apple pie, small-town streets, and pine air that feels nothing like the coast.
Food and markets
El Cajon has one of the region's best Middle Eastern food scenes, with bakeries, shawarma shops, and grocers along Main Street and Broadway. The El Cajon farmers market is a good Sunday habit.
